I always thought a Blog was a lamp from Ikea, but apparently it's something you're supposed to write in, or on, or whatever. Well, I've already written a whole book about my camp, but I've started to hear from other people, writing to me about theirs.
Here's a sampling:
1) I attended Girl Scout Camp... when I was 12. It was "rustic" to say the least ... and HOT! My greatest adventure came when I was in a hurry to get to swim class. We had done laundry and so our clothes line was full, meaning that we had to put our suits over the fence to dry. I was sitting on the edge of my bunk ... everyone else had gone ahead ... I had my suit up to my knees when I felt something crawling on my hand ... it was a scorpion and before I actually saw it I felt the sting. I screamed and flung the beast off of me ... so it was now somewhere in our cabin. I got my suit on (I checked for the scorpion's camp mates first) and hightailed it to the counselor. Needless to say, I missed swim class that day. It wasn't until two days later that my cabin mates and I found the unlucky critter ... amid a lot of screams and carrying on, we annihilated him ... I still like to go camping.
2) I have a horror story to tell about MY camp experience: I grew up in the 60's in Utah. My mother took me to catch the bus for my BIOLOGY camp and accidentally put me on the wrong bus!! I arrived at this really big, really nice camp - not recognizing a single soul! I finally got the nerve to ask someone and found out that I'd been taken to a MORMON Girls Camp!
3) When I was about 10 or 11, I was sent to a Girl Scout camp in New Jersey. It would have been the most miserable experience of my life except for an unusual turn of events which gave me four exhilarating days and a new direction in life. I was tall for my age and bookish, shy and non-athletic. I did not blend in well, especially as I was placed in a bunk house with older girls because I looked older. I was teased and became an outcast until a camp counselor took notice and invited me to star in a comic play called "The King and His Daughters". I was permitted to avoid the activities I hated and rehearse with her and a few others. I was chosen to be the king, because I was tall and skinny and had a big voice (and could memorize well). When the performance was given, I was astounded to receive applause and appreciative laughter. It was wonderful! Because of this success, I was a star around camp for the remaining four days of my stay. Perhaps it was one of the reasons I later became a teacher, specializing in shy and geeky kids. I used drama in my classroom and delighted in uncovering the talents of those who didn't even know they were talented. So, life takes unexpected and rewarding turns!
And this one:
4) Last night I was determined to finish the book. Our power went out and there I was on the bed reading it with a flashlight, just like the old days at (camp). My husband said that I didn't have to read it under the covers though.
Thank you! Please keep sending me anecdotes and maybe if we get enough of these, I can trade them in for an Ikea couch.
Mindy
